Mobile Development Project

WML Sample -
Bender's Bowling Mobile

I have seven cards in place for the fictional business Bender's Bowling. I used the info that would be the most relevent when using a mobile device - hours, contact, general info, etc. I was able to implement the following elements into the project.

  • Text
  • Line Breaks
  • Anchors - Links to the other cards
  • Image - Bender's Bowling logo
  • Select - Login options for a drop down menu
  • Input - Password input for the login
  • Variable - Results of the Login
  • Template - Previous page on each card

Since I had problems with many emulators being Windows-based, I had to find alternative methods to test my code. I ended using Device Central that came packaged with the Adobe Creative Suite as well as the Opera Mini Browser. I used Validome to validate my code.

I had issues with the login code. I couldn't get it to work correctly on my side. It may work on a PC. I copied the code exactly as I had seen in a tutorial as well multiple other WML resources to no avail. I noticed too that the menu keys displayed above the information instead of below as was shown in tutorials but it may be due to the fact that the devices didn't support WML 1.1 but rather WML 2.0.

Below is a screen shot of it being tested on the Opera Mini Browser.

XHMTL Sample -
Melissa Schubert Design Services Mobile

I have five pages implemented with this mobile site. I based it off of my portfolio site. I tried using more CSS but when I used the emulators they didn't display the way I had intented. I ended up keeping it very simple. I just used the blue from my site and logo minus some of the effects. It is difficult to design in a miniature version. It is interesting to see that it would like nice on smaller screen but so tiny on larger screens. I was designing on the premise that you design for the lowest denominator, not smartphones. I used bold, italic, ordered and unordered lists, line breaks, heading, paragraph and image tags. I implemented an external stylesheet as well rather than having it internal.

As for testing I used the same emulators and validator as previously used for the WML sample.
